For the price of an Oculus Rift and Project Cars, around $650, what could you instead buy for actual, real-world driving pleasure that would compare?
That’s over 4,000 miles worth of gas for your existing car for many canyon-carving road trips. That’s a couple of track days. About 20 autocrosses. An aftermarket tune. An aftermarket exhaust. Driving gloves, sunglasses, and perhaps even a driving hat?

Tires, suspension bits, anything that makes driving a better experience, really...adding to the fact that I had Project Cars on XB1 and I was absolutely not satisfied with the game...yeah..real world driving rules...

This is the point I keep bringing up to guys who spend $3k+ on sim rigs. I can’t justify that kind of investment knowing that could fund a couple years worth of autocross.

Suspension parts or a new set of high-end summer tires. Or maybe a Hondata S300, OBD2A-OBD1 conversion harness, and a tune.

Easy. I bought a car and got it running properly for less.

Jake got a riviera, and those are pretty awesome.

The Oculus requires a top of the line PC. Add to that the cheapest decent FFB wheel and cockpit (hopefully vibration too) and it’s $3000 total, including the Oculus. The return is being able to experience demos and small VR games, one racing game (Project Cars), motion sickness especially when going over the 20 to 30 minutes recommended limit, and have computer parts prone to huge depreciation.
With $3000 you can get a nice used bike, protection and gas. The return is having way more knowledge and experience about vehicles in general, a motorcycle license and goods that can be sold after for at least 50% of the value. Well and above all, a new hobby.

You’re not exactly comparing like to like. Your real-world driving experiences aren’t racing which is why people dump so much money into their rigs just look at iRacing. That said as Top Gear proved you can go racing for not very much money but then again that has geographical restrictions for most.
Anyway I would spend it on a Ring rental since I want some more Renaultsport in my life.

Yeah, but I’m not autocrossing a McLaren P1 at Laguna Seca.
It’s not comparable.

You’re not driving one there either.

As an autoreply, I was thinking that with that money you could actually go to any drive to any race track in the world.
For example, if by getting the Oculus the goal is to e-drive around Suzuka then be aware you are maybe going to to do it for two hours total tops, as it will getting boring and also dizzy after half an hour. With that money you could go to Japan to drive there, which includes the whole experience of going to that country. Well, not to mention Project Cars (officially supported) nor Assetto Corsa (eventually will support it) don’t have Suzuka in first place.
Lastly, in the estimate I didn’t include the cost of games and demos, and the time spent in assembling and configuring the PC. Could get into $4,000 territory.

I drove a single seater for around $500. It was the best thing ever, and I’d definitely pick that over any sim investment (I sim race a bit too). But the thing is, it’ll only last for the one day...

Definitely not an exact comparison. You can’t go on a spaceship in real life either, so there are benefits to VR outside of just driving.

For the price of Project CARS+ Oculus you could get Assetto Corsa+ Oculus.
But I'm not much help here, since I'm going to buy a Vive in a few months.

But that $3k SIM rig could give you thousand of hours of enjoyment with little to no added effort, whereas autocross requires you to build a car, drive to events, risk breaking things, fix things that break, etc. With a sim, you just sit down and drive a McLaren MP4-12C at Suzuka and get a very close experience to driving the real thing.

I’ve bought whole, working cars and motorcycles for less than $650 before. So there’s that, I guess.
